National Heritage Areas (NHAs) play a vital role in preserving America’s history, culture, and landscapes while fueling locally driven economic development and conservation efforts. Across more than 35 states and one U.S. territory, these partnerships empower hundreds of communities to celebrate their unique stories, protect treasured resources, and create sustainable opportunities for future generations. This important work would not be possible without the dedication of leaders who advocate for National Heritage Areas at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as the ongoing collaboration of allied organizations committed to cultural preservation and community vitality. In recognition of this leadership and commitment, the Alliance of National Heritage Areas is proud to honor four outstanding individuals as the 2026 Heritage Champions—leaders whose efforts have made a lasting difference in strengthening and sustaining the National Heritage Area program nationwide.
Among this year’s honorees is U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, a steadfast advocate for Colorado’s three National Heritage Areas. Throughout his tenure, Senator Bennet has demonstrated a deep commitment to protecting Colorado’s rich history, diverse cultural traditions, and remarkable natural landscapes. Working alongside fellow Colorado Senator John Hickenlooper, he led the successful effort to reauthorize Colorado’s National Heritage Areas, ensuring continued federal recognition and support for the communities they serve in 2022.
Beyond reauthorization, Senator Bennet has consistently supported initiatives that strengthen the long- term future of National Heritage Areas, recognizing their proven impact on heritage tourism, economic development, education, and conservation. Senator Bennet shared his appreciation to his former senior advisor for rural affairs and regional director for the San Luis Valley, Erin Minks, who kept him well informed of the Colorado Heritage Areas. His leadership has helped ensure that local voices remain at the center of preservation efforts while providing communities with the tools and resources they need to thrive.
As Senator Bennet looks ahead to his future endeavors, he has reaffirmed his commitment to preserving Colorado’s history and natural beauty. His legacy of support for National Heritage Areas will continue to benefit communities across the state for generations to come.
